D & S Family and Dining Room Makeover …WOW!

This sweet couple stole my heart from the first meeting. They may have a gorgeous new space, but I came out on top here with 2 beautiful new friends. Mrs. S contacted me in a state of stress and overwhelming anxiety about her family and dining spaces. She and her husband moved in about 5 years ago and agreed to take the previous owner’s existing flat screen TV which was mounted to a partial wall separating the family and dining spaces. This was the absolute root of the problem… so we fixed it.

The Design Plan

At the first consultation and as soon as I walked through the entryway – it was clear that the room was set up backward… meaning it needed to be flipped from right to left regarding the furniture position and TV location. The clients wanted to use some of their existing furniture but several pieces needed to go in order to balance the room properly. I recommended an L-shaped sectional sofa with the open end to the fireplace, but initially the clients wanted to keep their 3-seat sofa. As we moved forward with digital concepts, they ultimately decided to replace all existing pieces with a large sectional and we were “cooking with gas then!!” We kept the custom upholstered round ottoman as our inspiration piece and sourced other textiles that would coordinate.  A local cabinet maker – Jim Moseley with Moseley Cabinets collaborated with us to design a stunning media center with retractable doors so the TV can be seen or not seen – and it was situated on the appropriate wall. The sectional sofa and new media cabinet opened the room up to the fireplace and brought it into the space to be enjoyed as intended.

First Things First

Old wallpaper that had been painted over – and over – and over was removed. An ill placed “chair rail” that was positioned around the entire space at approximately 50 inches was removed. Sheetrock was repaired and fresh glorious paint in soft greige was applied – with a stunner of an accent color in bold blue adorns the partial wall between the family and dining spaces. Thanks to Rick’s Painting Services for all the tedious and detailed work that went into getting the space painted and prepped for the crowning jewels that were to come.

The Angled Wall

At the back of the family and dining space was an oddly angled wall. The space was large enough that it need to “be” something but too small for a lot of options. The desire was for it to be functional, mesh with the other spaces but not over-done or crowed. After some brain storming and playing around with a digital concept – a reading and bar nook was created and it is FABULOUS! We sourced the perfect easy chair in midnight blue, a copper top side table and a functional yet beautiful bar cabinet. Gray drapes created the backdrop and the space was no longer odd – it was the missing link between the two spaces… no longer missing.

Dining Room Bliss

This room had all the right pieces…but not in the right places. The space was off balance so we flipped the china hutch and antique server and there was harmony at last! A lot of brown was going on in this space but the clients wanted to keep their furniture. To break up the monotony, we used light taupe slipcovers on the 2 end chairs and set up the tabletop with lay upon layer of cozy runners, mats, charger plates, all in different but coordinating colors and textures. The china hutch was an awesome accident that we happened to catch just at the right time. During the sanding and prepping to paint it a different color – we all walked into the garage and knew in an instant the the distressed phase of prepping would be the final phase for this fun piece! Sanding revealed the white paint layer and original stained wood from years of painting. Now it has character and dimension and stands out like a queen against the blue accent wall.

Gallery Wall

Who say’s gallery walls are out? We don’t. In fact, nothing is “out” if you love it and it brings you joy. There are no rules in real design, there are only things that make you feel at home. We used the client’s personal collection of photographs from places they love & cherish, memorable trips and nostalgic treasures to create a gallery wall of canvas art. These are the things that set a “home” apart from a model house, these are the things that make our hearts -not just our eyes happy.

Last but certainly not least…the quaint entry space. This is where we added some whimsy and fun to invite the homeowners as well as their guests through the front door. A gun metal bench, glass lanterns and cozy textiles set the tone.  But “Charlie” (lovingly named by me) …the adorable shaggy Highland takes all the credit for this space. Across on the opposite wall – another “Charlie” tops the black iron coat rack and the client’s vintage stool sits below waiting for bags or mail to be dropped.

The Result 

In the end, this project turned out even more amazing than I have envisioned. From the first step through the front door – you take in the warm and relaxed feel of a space meant to be lived in. Its gorgeous but not a showroom, its perfect but still very inviting. The clients were still overwhelmed at the reveal but not in the same way they were at the first meeting. We all cried… at it was just amazing.
